We celebrated our first Mercado Sagrado this year! It was such a wonderful festival put on by such talented women, artists, and vendors. A true delight for the expansive junkie.
During our time in LA, we got to meet up with east-coast friends Boketto Wellness at WITMA live co-founder Kara Erickson's Malibu home. We gorged on expensive Erewhon, chatted wellness (typppppiiiiical), and got really really good sleep. Much needed as LA was our last stop of the 2018 Laka Summer Tour.
Plant Food + Wine | Nestled right along the edge of Abbot Kinney Boulevard, this restaurant is a fine example of plant-forward dining that is woven with creativity and mastery. And while the interior is bright and cozy, the outdoor patio is the ideal location for dining solo (especially during lunch, as it tends to be quieter) or with a small, intimate group for dinner. For sharing, we love their artisanal cheese plate and roasted brussels sprouts with apple caraway puree — and as far as mains, the kelp noodle cacio e pepe is a must.
Love Yoga | Finally having the chance to squeeze in a practice on the west coast, this Venice gem came highly recommended, and as expected, did not disappoint. If you’re intrigued by a practice that incorporates elements of katonah yoga and playing with multiple blocks to enhance and support the body through various postures while receiving incredible hands-on assists to Leon Bridges playing on the loud speakers, then step in for a noon special with Kyle Miller or any other of their kickass instructors.
Moon Juice | Wanting inspiration for how they have so successfully structured their tonic bar, we popped in at their OG Venice location for a custom almond moon milk with the fixings, some rose geranium bars, and of course plenty of snacks to bring home. They are usually always sampling something wonderful from their pantry, and is the one spot that we can always count on to inspire new tonics and recipes.
Erewhon | A natural foods mecca that you could easily spend hours at a time roaming the aisles, discovering products and brands that you never imagine existed — but at Erewhon, they do. Their prepared foods section and hot bar is a standout, similar to what Ellwood’s does on a local level, but a bit more elevated and eccentric. Shelves are full of dairy-free milk and probiotic yogurt options, adaptogen-infused pantry staples, blends and snacks, and their chocolate and tonic wall makes nearly any decision impossible…it’s all incredible. We kept going back for just one more CBD Peppermint Hemp Milk that tasted like mint chocolate chip ice cream in liquid form.
General Store | If Boketto had a sister that also carried clothing and a wide range of products for the home, then perhaps General Store would be it. I felt at home upon walking in, seeing beauty and visual aesthetic in every corner. It’s where we first discovered those lovely VOTE! For Democracy posters by Lena Wolff and Lexi Visco and almost left with Poppy & Someday’s entire skin apothecary.
Gjusta Bakery | Tucked away on Sunset Avenue, the rotating menu of flatbreads, pastries, salads, sandwiches and roasted veg dishes at this deli / cafe / bakery are enough to make you swoon for a quick sit down bite between things. And then there’s the wall of rosemary olive oil, za’atar salts, raw honey, house coffee blends and other pantry items to take with you. Gjusta Goods is conveniently next door for all of your houseware and ceramic needs.
Living Libations | Just a stroll away from Abbot Kinney and right along the Venice Beach boardwalk sits this sweet beauty boutique shop. What a dream to see every Living Libation product in one place, and to sample their chocolate (bliss!) that we smuggled home with us. We were given the complete rundown on plenty of select products that we’re making space to introduce to the existing line, from skin serums to moontime magic essential oil blends.
The Honey House | The most well-curated LA-style vintage shop located right across the street from Erewhon Venice. We found the coolest gently used, one of a kind vintage items here and the three women who run this joint are total beauties! A true mecca for the sustainable shopper.
The Butcher’s Daughter | Super basic, but never overdone. I drank my second iced latte here and wasn't even anxious, it was that smooth. Big girl, real-woman sized salads with the most delicious coconut bacon toppings. The perfect place for casual conceptualizing for the modern wellness practitioner.
MTN (Mountain) | Vegetarian Ramen bowls with fresh tomato jam, finished with dry + smoky sake? Si, Mamacita. Si.
Two Guns Espresso | As a super sensitive coffee drinker (bad beans kickstart my inflammation and anxiety), I was thoroughly impressed by this beach town bean bar. Within steps to Manhattan Beach, they have smooth as glass espresso — order 2 shots over ice filled with extra ice and oat milk! No sugar needed, baby.
