We are slightly fascinated with the super-powers and potential of a healthy HPA axis. So many clients, friends, and family come to us with issues related to digestion, mood, skin disorders, high stress levels, and sexual dysfunction to name a handful*. Short for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the HPA axis is an inner system feedback "loop" that governs digestion, stress, mood, and sex. An out of whack HPA axis can be labeled as adrenal fatigue with symptoms including, but not limited to: disturbed circadian rhythms, shifty mood, poor digestion, low sex drive, fatigue, inflammation, and weight gain. HPA axis dysfunction (adrenal fatigue) is simply caused by stress. Stress can be identified as drinking polluted water, eating toxic foods, working out too much, breathing toxic air, or staying in a chronic state of fight or flight (think waking up to blue-lit phone alarms, traffic every morning for 1+ hours, and bad indoor lighting).
